Whether you like the road or the trail and you chose to stay in a beautiful cozy Bed and Breakfast or camp beside a babbling stream you will find your time in the beautiful N.E Georgia Mountains a vacation to remember for life. The Georgia Mountains Region or North Georgia Mountains is an area that starts in the northeast corner of Georgia and spreads in a westerly direction. The mountains in this region are in the Blue Ridge Mountain chain that ends in Georgia. At over 1 billion years of age, the Blue Ridge Mountains are among the oldest mountains in the United States and sometimes mistaken to be the oldest mountains in the world. The mountains in this region are also a part of the vast system of mountains known as the Appalachian Mountains that spans most of the United States South to North along the eastern areas of the nation and is home to the famous Appalachian Trail that starts near Dahlonega, Georgia and ends in Northern Maine.
The region is known for its ruggedness and scenic beauty. The Cherokee who lived in these mountains called them Sah-ka-na'-ga - "The Great Blue Hills of God." Large portions of the North Georgia Mountains are included in the more than 750,000 acres (3,000 km2) that comprises the Chattahoochee National Forest.
“There’s Gold in them thar hills” The Georgia Gold Rush was the second significant gold rush in the United States. It started in 1828 in the present day Lumpkin County near county seat Dahlonega, and soon spread through the North Georgia Mountains, following the Georgia Gold Belt. Although the discovery of gold in Georgia in 1828 was the event that led to the Georgia Gold Rush, there was knowledge of gold in the North Georgia Mountains much earlier. Since the 16th century, Indians in Georgia told early explorers that the small amounts of gold which they possessed came from mountains of the interior.
